Adelaide Central Market
January 23rd 2009 07:18
Today was the day to go to the Central Market to get our weekly fruit and vegetables. My husband and I went, cruising around looking at things and buying the best and freshest of everything we wanted.
I can't imagine ever buying all of my fruit, veggies and meat at the supermarket, no matter how fresh they claim their stuff is. At the Central Market, I know who has the best carrots, snow peas, apples, whatever want or need. I don't live close to Adelaide really, but it's worth the trip from Redbanks in terms of freshness and fun.
I get to tootle around with my little personal shopping trolley which I bring with me from home, and I visit my mum on the way home, sometimes sharing some delicious little morsels with coffee when I get there. And I pretend I'm one of those rich ladies, who do lunch in town and things like that. I'm friends with my regular people that I buy things from and I chat as I shop. It's all good.
If you live anywhere near Adelaide, or you come for a visit, make sure you get along to the Adelaide Central Market. It's an institution, and it's well worth a look. If you like mushrooms, you'll love Marco the Mushroom Man, if you like game meats, check out the store that is chock full of it. After wursts and stuff? Barossa Fine Foods is the place to be. And it goes on and on.
And because we went to the Central Market today, that means we're having bits and pieces for tea, like we always do on Central Market days. So there's cheese sticks, bagels, chicken gallantine (yummalicious!), snowpeas, carrots sticks, some fresh cauliflower and whatever else it is that I bought. Very healthy, very nice. We all love Central Market bits and pieces for tea.
And husband and son are taking beesting cakes from the Central Market for lawn bowls afternoon tea tomorrow. I'm helping out, they're bowling - I hope the men don't eat all of the cake, because I just love beestings - they're a german cake with almonds, honey and I don't know what else. They taste fantastic.

I thought I'd gotten over my homesickness for Adelaide 15 years ago, but the three words of your headline grabbed me and the words of your lovely post stabbed me.
Adelaide Central Market is what a major market should be, a little bit of paradise.
When you go next week, kindly say hello to it for me.
