Tea last night
August 18th 2008 02:19
Well, tea didn't really happen for me last night, because I was out all day & I'd said not to worry about me, I'd get something later. As it turned out , husband and son were in the middle of tea when I got home - they had KFC and I snuck a couple of bits of popcorn chicken. I'd also said to leave feeding the dogs, & I'd do it once I got home - the things you do!
I'd had vegetarian pizza for lunch, so I wasn't starving hungry anyway. When I say 'I had vegetarian pizza for lunch' you may be thinking I had something with capsicum, onions, baby spinach maybe and tomatoes. WRONG!
I had lunch at a British themed pub and the pizza had cooked potato, broccoli and something else green. I didn't eat the potato and only had half of the pizza. That's a lesson for me - British and pizza - forget it!
But the food didn't matter because the whole day was filled with food for thought. I was at the Salisbury Council Writing Festival - the whole weekend was fantastic, shmoozing with other writers and learning, learning, learning. Friday night was the opening night, with a talk by a man who has written a history of the now closed down Gepps Cross abattoirs. Fascinating stuff, fascinating life. Some people just eat up challenges, this guy sure does.
Saturday there was a talk by journalist and writer Angela Goode - very interesting, followed by a panel of other writers. It was interesting to hear about the different ways different writers go about their craft and their art. Then lunch and a session on writing for children, with a bit of focus on the getting published side of it all.
Sunday I was in heaven - Poetry, poetry, poetry! It started with a workshop with Martin Johnson, who cracked the whip and got us all writing a poem in ten minutes - four times! We got some feedback and we got a lesson in not waiting around for the Muse, but just getting down to it and writing. It's given this procrastination queen a wake up call.
I've written a new poem this morning and I'll probably write at least one more today, as well as do second drafts on the ones I wrote with Martin yesterday. So for me, the whole weekend was fantastic! I sold some copies of my self-published book, 'Dig It! Gardening Tips for Dogs' (12.00 incl postage & handling), too, which was exciting. I also handed out lots of entry forms and guidelines for the Poetry competition my poetry group are running.
If anyone's interested, the theme for the poetry comp. is 'Tracks and Trails' and entries close on 15 January 2009 - plenty of time to get a few poems written and sent off to me. Email me if you, or anyone you know may be interested. There's a class for Primary school students, one for Secondary school students, and for adults. There's a fee of $5.00 for each poem for the Adult class, free entry for the students.
On to my next poem!
