Puppies - what can be cuter?
July 8th 2008 03:59
At the moment our place is teeming with puppies. We have seven schnauzer babies, nine weeks old, and we have absolute record rain. Puppies and mud - what can be better?
Well, puppies and nice dry lawn would be better, but we've suffered from drought, then a manic hole digging pharaoh hound, then the rain. So, muddy puppies. They're still mega cute though.
Some of these little darlings are on their way to new homes, three are leaving us on Sunday, we're keeping the others unless a home turns up for them. Being a dog breeder is fun, but it's also frustrating at times, and downright messy lots of the tiime. The fun usually dominates, so that's good.
Frustration comes from things like the mud, puppies going where they're not meant to go, older dogs deciding they don't like puppies (no problems with that yet thank goodness). Also our puppies over the years have eaten things they shouldn't - video camera view finder was the most expensive thing - that was many years ago now though.
What are puppies supposed to eat? Well, in the wild puppies dine on mother's milk and whatever mother and other pack memebers chew up and then throw up. After that they will progressively learn to eat what the others eat, and eventually catch their own prey, and eat that.
Our puppies though are not wild dogs, they tame (as tame as puppies can be!). Our puppies started on mothers milk, and then high quality dry puppy food, soaked in hot water to start with and now dry. They are doing very well on it. They still have sips of milk from Nena, their mother, and they so eat leaves, grass, sticks, bits of whatever takes their fancy.
The older dogs eat the same brand of dry food, (for adults, not puppies though) plus they all love mushrooms, so they get mushroom offcasts from time to time. They're all doing well.
